William Walton Edition vol. 18 Hardback-This volume contains newly edited versions of a number of Walton's shorter pieces for orchestra including the ever-popular Facade Suites.

The Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition III/1/5. Par MARTINU BOHUSLAV. “Incarnation” (1956), Bohuslav Martinu’s fourth piano concerto, follows an atypical two-movement structure. It was composed for Martinu’s friend Rudolf Firkušný, who played from a copy of the autograph until 1970, when the composition was first put into print. The next work, “Concerto in B flat major for Piano and Orchestra”, known under the name “Fantasia Concertante”, was to be Martinu’s very last concert work. The concerto in three movements, composed at the request of Swiss pianist Margrit Weber, is quite different from the previous work in terms of its compositional means. In this case, Martinu strongly influenced the edition of the work. The present volume of the Complete Edition of works by Bohuslav Martinu is based mainly on contemporary copies containing the composer’s own modifications. Hardback-This volume contains newly edited versions of four important later orchestral works by William Walton: Capriccio Burlesco Improvisations on an Impromptu of Benjamin Britten Prologo e Fantasia and Varii Capricci. The first three works were written for American orchestras: Capriccio Burlesco was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra for its 125th anniversary year in 1968; the Improvisations based on a theme from Britten's Piano Concerto No. 1 was written in 1969 and dedicated to the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra; Prologo e Fantasia was written in 1981-2 for the National SymphonyOrchestra of Washington DC. The last work Varii Capricci was a free transcription for orchestra by Walton of his Five Bagatelles for Guitar and written for the opening of the Royal Festival Hall in 1976.

Gustav Mahler's symphonies tend to be scored for a large orchestra putting this wonderful music out of reach of many smaller orchestras. This arrangement whilst not simplifying the music attempts to remedy this by reducing the orchestral requirements. The original orchestration requires 3 flutes 3 oboes 3 clarinets 3 bassoons 7 horns 4 trumpets 3 trombones tuba timpani percussion and strings. Although in many of Mahler's symphonies each movement seems to be an integral part of the larger work we feel that this movement can stand alone quite happily and offers a good entry to the symphonic world of Gustav Mahler.

In Tchaikovsky's symphonic output his Symphony No. 4 was a pivotal work. (1993)Since its premiere by the Baltimore Symphony in 1994 at Carnegie Hall the GRAMMY®-winning Metropolis Symphony has entered the orchestral repertoire and been performed by orchestras all over the world.Metropolis Symphony is a five-movement musical response to the world of Superman; Red Cape Tango Daugherty's final work based on the Superman mythology is set after Superman's fight to the death withDoomsday. The principal melody (first heard in the bassoon) is derived from the medieval Latin death chant Dies Irae. This dance of death is conceived as a tango presented at times like a concertino comprising stringquintet brass trio bassoon chimes and castanets. The orchestra alternates between legato and staccato sections to suggest a musical bullfight.

John Corigliano (b. 1938) is an American composer. One of his most enjoyable compositions is The Mannheim Rocket commissioned by the Mannheim orchestra in the year 2000. It takes inspiration from theRocket of the title – a famous compositional device invented by the orchestra in the 1700s. From there it swiftly traverses 200 years of German music cleverly hiding quotes from some of the most famous orchestralworks of the era rising to its zenith before falling back to earth – exactly as a real rocket would. Described by the composer as a “marvellous journey” this orchestral piece is one of the mostentertaining in the repertoire – both to play and to listen to.

For Orchestra With Solo Clarinet In B-Flat-Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie is one of two concertante works completed premiered and published during his lifetime. He was commissioned to write it in 1909 for the final examination at the Paris Conservatoire in 1910. Debussy orchestrated it in the summer of 1911. While transferring the clarinet part from the already published version for clarinet and piano he made a few subtle changes particularly in m. 201 which has been a bone of contention among clarinettists for over a century.The present scholarly-critical publication is the first Urtext edition of the orchestral version.
